Ahh High School

Posted by Heather

Well it's that time of year again that those of us MHS Chorus freaks gather for. Yes, that's right ladies and gentlemen, Dinner Theater.

Okay backstory for those who have no idea what I'm speaking of.

Mauldin High School. Loud, dramafilled, musical. Yes, on any given day you could find a group of not so inconspicuous adolescents walking around singing in two or three part harmony and dancing as they walked from 3rd period to their respective 4th. These were the Chorus Kids. The ones who would don their MHS Singers shirt so you knew they could sing and just in case the shirt wasn't enough for you, they'd sing as loud as they could down the breezeway so all could hear as it ricocheted from glass panel to glass panel. The ones who you always saw with other people who may have looked normal but were in Singers as well. The ones who well you probably found abnoxious several times. This could be for one of two reasons: You tried out for Singers and didn't make it because you  A) weren't that good or B) May didn't like you (sorry i have to be honest) or they were abnoxious because they were ALWAYS singing and laughing about field trips that really weren't field trips and you wish you were in it just to get out of class as much as they did. Either way, you would be annoyed. I myself, must admit, I was a Chorus Kid. Shoot, I was THE chorus kid..and shoot again, I AM THE CHORUS KID. That was proven tonight as you will soon read...if you make it that far.

MHS Singers-n. people who auditioned to be in the highest choral honor at Mauldin and became known as "those people who sing." also look up, dramatists, nuncunpoops, and cocky.

Okay, in all seriousness, it was an amazing group of people. Would I want to go back and do it all over? ehh, most likely not. Do I enjoy going back and catching up with old friends? Absolutely. Hence, Dinner Theater. A time where some of the best music is made and some of the best friends caught up with.

Tonight was "100 Years of Broadway." This was my second favorite show we did my 4 years of MHS. Love the music. So I ventured over with Benjamin and ate dinner and went and got my seat. We sat and waited. Laughed about old times and how we spent our time during Dinner Theater.  Oh I should mention this was me and Julianne not Ben. lol. Anyways, so the show started...I knew all the music. Some stuff was new this year like the Hairspray exerpts which were really good and the Wicked songs....also REALLY good. But here is what proves I AM THE CHORUS KID...I sang the whole night and did the dances. I did the dances from chorus one...wasn't in Chorus I when they did that and the stuff from Treble...I was never in Treble to learn their songs and their dances. However, I have video of that year. I watched it a lot. I learned all of it. So I AM THE CHORUS KID. I also am a total dweeb but that's okay.

Dinner Theater makes me miss Chorus. Not the drama, not really the people either because a lot of them caused the drama, but just the idea of a choir that sings and has fun while they do it. I don't get that too much at NGU. We have fun, sure. But we don't sing songs that a lot of people would enjoy because they aren't what I call "high brow." This sounds mean and stuff but I don't mean it to. I just mean not a lot of people want to hear an 8 minute long song in German. But people do love musicals. And people do love songs that are in English...if they speak it that is. It's just annoying to go back to what I came from and then go to where I am now because it is so vastly differnent.

Music Suggestion: Listen to the Soundtrack from  "A Little Night Music." The song "Send in the Clowns" is on it and it's a great song.

i really did enjoy the looks we got walking through the halls singing songs. i miss that a lot. it's so weird because i'm afraid to do that now. like sometimes at church i'll walk around singing but i get embarrassed easily by singing now for some reason. oh well
